ALL THINGS TURBO

Before you wince at the thought of having to replace your turbo, know that in many cases minor turbo issues can be fixed as part of a full service. If it's not possible to resolve your issue, don't worry, we can replace your turbo with a new or remanufactured* turbocharger—and we have very competitive labour rates.

*Remanufactured means a part has been stripped down and rebuilt 'like-new'. This is more extensive than a refurbish, which only guarantees returning a part to working order.

Do I Need To Replace My Turbo?

Oil contamination or lack of lubrication

Symptoms: Whining noise, smoke from exhaust, turbo failure.

Causes: Dirty or insufficient oil, clogged oil lines.

Fixable in a full service? Often, yes. Our full service includes an oil change and replacing the oil filter, which can prevent or mitigate this issue—if caught early.

Boost leak (air leaks)

Symptoms: Loss of power, whistling noises, check engine light.

Causes: cracked or loose intercooler pipes or hoses.

Fixable in a full service? Sometimes, if the leak is from a hose or a loose clamp. A full inspection will be provided to locate any leaks.

Worn turbo bearings

Symptoms: Excessive shaft play, high-pitched whining, smoke.

Causes: Oil starvation, age, poor quality oil.

Fixable in a full service? No. This usually requires replacing the turbocharger.

Excessive exhaust smoke

Symptoms: Blue or black smoke under acceleration.

Causes: Oil leaking into the intake or exhaust from worn seals.

Fixable in a full service? Unlikely. May require replacing the turbo.

Foreign object damage

Symptoms: Loud noise, poor performance, possible total failure.

Causes: Debris entering the turbo.

Fixable in a full service? No. Turbo replacement is needed.
